Our snorkeling tour by ferry boat to Koh Tao (Turtle island) and Koh Nang Yuan (Seagull island) takes around 2 hours. It is because of Koh Tao’s distance away from the mainland and it being surrounded by deeper water that gives Koh Tao the best water visibility in the Gulf of Thailand, making it the most popular place in Thailand for snorkeling and scuba diving tours.
Even though Koh Tao is only a small island, it has plenty of sites ideal for both snorkeling and diving, with a diversity of tropical marine life, beautiful coral and decent water visibility for most of the year.
The snorkeling sites visited by the ferry from Koh Samui are often limited to a few due to the depth of the water the large ferry can navigate but they are among the most popular around Koh Tao. The popularity of these snorkeling sites are well deserved, which typically have some of the best coral formations found in Koh Tao and there is always beautiful marine life to be found.
Of course it can some times be a little crowded as a ferry will take more people than a speed boat. The advantage of the ferry boat over speed boat is it usually a more comfortable transfer. The boats are air conditioned and due to their size are less affected by poor water conditions, making them ideal for those who are prone to sea sickness. As the ferry can afford the space, there are usually more staff available to ensure your experience is as good as it can be, such as professional photographers, multilingual tour guides and life guards.
Koh Nang Yuan is located just half a kilometer north west of Koh Tao. This is the paradise island of 3 rocky outcrops connected by beach featured in much of the media on Koh Samui. It is indeed a beautiful place to visit, and even though receives thousands of visitors every year has managed to retain the charm of a paradise island by not over developing.
On Koh Nang Yuan you can find 2 sites for snorkeling and diving, Japanese Garden and Twin Peaks, both of which feature a stunning coral landscape and a rich abundance of tropical marine life. Snorkeling here is a great opportunity for taking some underwater photos. You can also recreate the famous photo seen in all the brochures and posters by hiking to Koh Nang Yuan’s view point.
It takes approximately 45 minutes to walk up, take some photos and walk back down again. If you’re looking to explore a little, there is a rather charming wooden walkway constructed around the same outcrop as Koh Nang Yuan’s view point, which takes around 15-20 mins to walk around at a leisurely pace.
A new feature installed on Koh Nang Yuan is the zip lines that run between the outcrops. It costs around 1,000 Baht per person to have a go and is really quite a lot of fun and another excellent photo opportunity.
The final and most obvious feature is the 2 beaches connecting the island together, which also hosts a beach bar. The prices are on the expensive side but not unreasonable, which is what you might expect of a major tourist destination. So chill out, relax and enjoy the sun and maybe a cocktail!
Top tip: A good day to avoid the crowds is the day after the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan, as a lot of people will avoid day tripping to nurse their hangover and recover from the party.
On this professional snorkelling tour, you’ll be picked up first thing from your hotel and taken to the Maenam Pier in Koh Samui for coffee and pastries while you wait to board the catamaran to Koh Tao. The journey takes around 90 minutes – there are plenty of seats in the air-conditioned cabin as well as on the sun deck and you will be supplied with refreshments along the way to keep you comfortable.
Once you arrive at Koh Nang Yuan, you are transferred to the Talay-Nai tour boat and whisked off to get stuck in to your first snorkelling spot of the day. The crystal clear waters are just teeming with beautiful tropical fish, as well as corals and other underwater sights.
Depending on the weather conditions on the day, the majority of the snorkeling on the Lomprayah tour takes place around the sheltered bays in the north of Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, such as at Mango Bay, Tain Nok Bay, Japanese Gardens, Hin Wong bay and Sairee bay.
The Lomprayah Catamaran snorkelling tour to Koh Tao is suitable for both beginners and experienced snorkellers alike. If you just want to dip your toes in the water, so to speak, you can do on this tour. Relaxation and exploration are the aims of this day out, just as much as the snorkelling.
At around midday you return to Nang Yuan for an exquisite buffet lunch at the island’s restaurant. There you can enjoy the beautiful ocean and beach views while sampling some of the best Thai cuisine around. And maybe a cocktail or two!
Lunch is Thai food and buffet style (self-serving), consisting of several delicious Thai dishes and fresh fruit. Soft drinks, alcohol and additional items can be purchased at the restaurant or on the boat at similar prices to the beach bar. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements when booking, such being vegetarian, so that we may let the restaurant know to accommodate you.
After lunch you can choose to do more snorkelling, relax on the beach or explore the Nang Yuan island, taking in the stunning views. Or all of the above! The beach perfect weather creates an idyllic holiday atmosphere to while away the hours to. Surrounding the island are renown snorkelling and diving sites that represent the best in the Gulf of Thailand – there’s a vibrant world beneath the surface that’s teeming with colourful marine life – not to be missed!
