Koh Samui to Pattaya by Bus

All buses to the mainland leave from Nathon bus terminal on the west coast of Koh Samui. To Pattaya, buses go via Bangkok and are fully air conditioned with 2 classes available: VIP and economy, with the notable difference being space to recline your seat and snacks & drinks are included. The full journey takes around 14-15 hours.

Starting with a hotel pickup to Nathon to catch the main bus service, the journey from Koh Samui to Pattaya begins with the ferry crossing to Donsak that takes 90 minutes. In Donsak you will jump back on the bus once it has departed from the ferry and travel to Bangkok, taking 10 hours or so. There are usually 2 stops along the way at Thai service stations, where you can expect traditional Thai toilet facilities, shops & restaurants. A movie is put on from Donsak but it is most often in Thai.

Once in Bangkok, there are connecting buses to Pattaya, which take around 2 hours to your final destination.

Koh Samui to Pattaya by Ferry

Like all transport from Koh Samui to Pattaya, journey by ferry goes via Bangkok for a journey time of 17-18 hours traveling overnight. The ferry companies that operate between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan & Koh Tao have added an extra stop after Koh Tao to Chumphon on the mainland, which is approximately half way to Bangkok. From there a coach is provided to take you all the way to Bangkok’s Khao San Road, where you can get a taxi directly to Pattaya (1,500 THB) or to Ekamai station for the bus (140 THB).

The ferry is a little slower than bus at 15 hours to Bangkok but you have freedom to move around the boat inside or out on the sun deck, English movies are played (on the bus too) to keep you entertained and there’s a small snack shop on board. Decent toilet facilities are also on board. The coaches are modern and air conditioned, with comfortable seating. Hotel transfers in Koh Samui are included.

Koh Samui to Pattaya by Plane

There’s one direct flight from Koh Samui to Pattaya every day with Bangkok Airways, taking 1 hour 15 minutes and is by far the quickest route to Pattaya. Airfares are range from 3,800 THB to 5,000 THB depending on availability and demand. Hotel transfers are not included but can be booked separately. Please remember to allow at least 45 minutes for check-in & walking to the departure gate at Koh Samui Airport.

There are alternative routes to Pattaya via Bangkok, which may work out slightly cheaper but will require a connecting transfer by taxi or bus. Including the time it takes to drive to Pattaya, you’re looking at a total travel time of around 3 hours.

You can also touch down directly in Don Mueang Airport with Air Asia’s service that’ll take you by bus and ferry from Koh Samui to Nakhon Si Tammarat for a flight to Bangkok. From there you can get a taxi or bus to Pattaya. The Air Asia service to Bangkok is typically 1,300 THB to 1,800 THB and a taxi to Pattaya 1,500 THB, with buses significantly cheaper. Expect the total journey time to be 6 hours 30 minutes.

Koh Samui to Pattaya by Train

Travel by train from Koh Samui to Pattaya goes via Bangkok and takes 21 hours 30 minutes. There are 3 parts to the journey:

The first part is getting from Koh Samui to Surat Thani train station. Our service includes hotel transfer to Nathon bus station, where you will catch the service to Surat Thani. At the beginning, the bus will take you to the pier for the 90 minute ferry crossing to the mainland port of Donsak. You’ll board the ferry separately from the bus and join back up with it on the other side. From there it takes about 80 minutes to get to Surat Thani city train station.

The train to Bangkok’s Hualamphong Station takes 12 hours travelling overnight. Train, while taking longer than bus, have the advantage of you being able to freely wander around, enjoy some amazing scenery, sleep part of the journey in a bed (and save on hotel cost) and of course socialise with fellow travelers. 1st and 2nd class sleeper carriages are available as well as 2nd class seats.

All carriages are air-conditioned (you can save 200 THB for no AC in 2nd class). 1st class sleepers are modern and have lockable berth compartments for privacy, with a wash basin, soap & fresh towels. A toilet and cold water shower is provided at the end of the carriage. 2nd class sleepers have bunks arranged dormitory style against the walls, they don’t provide as much privacy but are comfortable and travelers enjoy the openness to engage with other like-minded people. A train attendant will make up all the bunks with fresh linen. 2nd class seats are reasonably comfortable reclining seats.

On arrival to Hualamphong Station in Bangkok, you’ll have about 30 minutes to switch to the train to Pattaya. This train is 3rd class only and is quite slow, taking 3 hours 30 minutes but for only 50 THB! Some prefer to take a quicker taxi or bus to Pattaya, which takes 90 minutes to 2 hours, and costs .
