There’s only one way to travel from Koh Samui to Khao Lak; bus & ferry. Transfer services run daily and take around 7 hours.
Khao Lak is approximately 60km north of Phuket and is well known for its scuba diving liveaboard trips to The Similan islands and its beautiful natural surroundings away from the hustle & bustle of the main tourist hot spots.
The journey from Koh Samui to Khao Lak starts with a hotel transfer in an air conditioned mini bus to Nathon bus terminal where you will board the main bus service to Khao Lak. Your pick up will be up to 1 hour prior to the bus’s scheduled departure time. The buses to Khao Lak are air conditioned and comfortable, and there are plenty of opportunities for leg stretching and purchasing snacks & drinks along the way.
The first part of the journey is a short trip to the car ferry port, where you will get off the bus and board the ferry to Donsak separately. The car ferries are large and quite stable even in the roughest sea conditions and they are regularly checked by the Thai Navy to maintain the highest safety standards. On board you will find plenty of seating, an air conditioned cabin, a sun deck, toilet facilities and a reasonably priced snack shop. The crossing to Donsak takes 90 minutes, where you will disembark and meet back up with your bus at the end of the pier.
Leaving Donsak, the bus will travel to Surat Thani city bus station, which is roughly 80 minutes away. This is where you will change bus for the final leg of the journey to Khao Lak. The stop will be for about 30 minutes, which is ample time to stretch your legs again & purchase any more snacks for the remainder of the trip. On leaving Surat Thani, the 3.5 hour journey will include an additional stop at a Thai service station before arriving in Khao Lak center.
