There are many ways to travel from Koh Samui to Singapore and what you choose depends on the time you have available, your budget and what experience you’d like.
The bus from Koh Samui to Singapore takes around 18 hours. Starting with a hotel transfer by mini bus to Nathon bus station, you’ll board the main bus service to Hat Yai. Service begins with a short trip to the car ferry pier, where boarding the ferry separately, you and the bus will take the 90 crossing to Donsak on the mainland. In Donsak you’ll get back on the bus, which will continue down to Hat Yai, the main transport hub in the south of Thailand.
After the 5 hour travel to Hat Yai, you will change bus to go over the Thai-Malaysian border at Sadao and onward to Kuala Lumpur. You have 30 minutes or so for this change, which is an opportunity to stock up on any drinks or snacks, or go to the toilet. The border is just a 45 minute trip away, where you’ll disembark once more to go through Thai and Malaysian border security to stamp your passports out and in the countries. Once in Malaysia, you’ll continue for 7 hours to Kuala Lumpur, where you’ll change bus one last time for the 7hr journey to Singapore with a another border stop along the way.
All coaches to Singapore are comfortable & air conditioned, with the usual facilities and will stop at frequent intervals for rest breaks. The car ferries are large and stable in even the roughest sea conditions. On board you’ll find plenty of seats, air conditioned cabins, toilet facilities and a very reasonably priced shop to buy snacks & drinks.
To go from Koh Samui to Singapore, train is a comfortable choice taking 32 hours in total. The first part of the journey to Hat Yai is as described above. Once in Hat Yai you’ll require a short taxi ride from the bus to train station to get the train to Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station, which takes 14 hours 30 minutes. The train has 2nd class sleeper & seating carriages available and arrives early morning.
In Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station, you’ll have 2 hours to explore before the train to Singapore leaves, which takes a further 8 hours, arriving at Singapore Woodlands in the north, about 15km from the city center. You can get to Singapore city center by bus and MRT (metro) in 65 minutes for around S$4 or a taxi will take 30-40 minutes for S$30.
2nd class sleepers are popular for overnight journeys due the low cost and saving on hotel, and are quite comfortable. Berths are arranged dormitory style along the carriage walls either side of a central aisle, with the upper berths 100 THB cheaper than the lower but a bit narrower. At this time in the morning the beds will already be made up with with fresh linen and curtains for privacy. Later in the morning the berths convert into seats.
There are direct flights from Koh Samui to Singapore every day, which take just 2 hours 20 minutes. Ticket prices range from 8,000 THB – 12,000 THB and do not include an airport transfer from your hotel, which can be booked with us separately. Remember, you need at least 45 minutes for check-in.
There are also various other ways to fly to Singapore, which are cheaper than direct from Koh Samui but still get you there much faster than by bus or train. Flights from Bangkok & Phuket are usually reasonably priced at 1,800 THB to 5,000 THB, depending on how far in advance you book and the seat availability.
The flight times are around 3 hours but the travel to these airports adds several hours to your overall journey time. You can fly to both Bangkok or Phuket for 2500 THB to 5500 THB and 3,000 THB respectively, or cross over to the mainland by ferry & go by bus. The good news is journeys by bus & ferry are very cheap and include hotel transfers.
